How to turn podcast listeners into email subscribers
I've stumbled upon a strategy so devious, so simple, yet so effective, it'll make you say, "Why didn't I think of that?!"
It's a way to turn your podcast into an email list-building machine, and vice versa.
I've never seen anyone do this before. Until now.
Enter Sam Parr, the host behind "My First Million" and "MoneyWise" podcasts.
This guy's playing 4D chess.
Here's what he did:
First, Sam posted a teaser video for an upcoming podcast episode featuring Mr. Ballen.
The post is simple: "Mr. Ballen pod coming out soon… So pumped." Plus a link.
Nothing fancy, right?
But here's where it gets interesting.
That link? It doesn't take you to the podcast. Oh no, that would be too easy.
Instead, it leads to a landing page.
A page that teases you even more about this exclusive pre-release episode.
And then, the pièce de résistance: A button that says "Listen Before Anyone Else."
Click that button, and bam an email opt-in form appears.
Want that sweet, sweet content before the masses?
Just fork over your email address.
It's brilliant. It's beautiful.
It's the kind of move that makes marketing nerds like me weep with joy.
Why does this work?
- Exclusivity
- Curiosity
- Easy Action
Now, I can already imagine someone saying: "But Dylan, I don't have someone like Mr. Ballen on my podcast!"
To be honest, I don’t even know who Mr. Ballen is.
You don't need a celebrity. You just need to present your great content in a way that intrigues your audience.
It could be you reading the terms and conditions to iOS 18 if you make it sound interesting enough.
The point is, you're creating a win-win situation.
Your listeners get exclusive content, and you get their email addresses.
If you’d like to implement this strategy, here's your homework:
- Plan your next "big" podcast episode.
- Create a teaser that'll make your audience interested.
- Set up a simple landing page with an email opt-in.
- Watch your email list and podcast grow faster.
Remember, the one who has the biggest email list controls the universe. Or something like that. I'm not a philosopher, I’m just playing one in today’s email.
