AI Is Now Deciding If You Look Suspicious
New York City is installing AI cameras inside subway gates, but they're not just checking if you paid.
When you walk through, the camera scans you, and AI automatically writes a physical description of what you look like.
If it suspects suspicious behavior, the description, along with a photo or video clip, is sent to police in real time.
Studies have shown this AI is less accurate at identifying minorities.
Meaning it's more likely to flag the wrong person if you're anything other than white.
The MTA is also plugging AI into 15,000 existing security cameras across the entire subway system, scanning for unusual behavior, weapons, and unattended bags.
Over 4 million people ride the subway every single day.
The MTA is spending $1.1 billion to make sure every single one of them is watched.
